Most players, roll a ranger class because they like fighting at a distance. The ranger brings quiet a few skills in its arsenal to enable them to succeed at fighting in this manner. These are excellence at using the bow, able to shoot while running and the use of snares and traps, However, it's main disadvantage is their fragile amour, though partially mitigated with evasion. So distance is important, and keeping that distance up is the secret of the Rangers combat advantage. Kiting is a mmorpg term used to describe the ability to keep the enemies at a distance, while still being able to attack them. This is very useful against melee based characters, since if they cannot reach you, they cannot hurt you. Since the ranger does not have to stop when firing the bow, this can be very frustrating for the melee opponents, since they are taking damage while trying to catch up with the ranger. In order to be fully successful at this, you also need to master traps and snaring.

Given enough armour and room, the opponent can eventually catch you, so kiting itself is not enough. In addition you will also have to slow them down somehow. This is where snaring helps.
